Mumbai : Demonetization has played an integral role in Anurag Kashyap’s film Choked: ‘Paisa Bolta Hai’. The filmmaker says that it helped him relate the story of money and marriage effortlessly. The filmmaker said, “Choked: Paisa Bolta Hai was always a great idea and a good script but lacked the ‘X-factor’. Demonetization worked to tie it together.”
In terms of making the film, Kashyap told IANS, “It was a good process to work on the film. It was a long wait. It started with a script in 2015. At that time, there was no demonetization and when it happened, it had to be included in the script and that’s why we rewrote the script. ” He added, “Nihit Bhave kept working on it. Syami Kher came in the year 2017 and Roshan Mathew came in 2018. We shot the film in 2019.”
Significantly, in the year 2016, the Government of India decided to discontinue demonetization of old notes of 500 and 1,000 rupees to take out black money, eliminate fake currency, and tackle terrorism funding. This decision led to long queues in the country’s banks, people were looking for different ways to replace old notes with new ones, and many big events such as weddings began to be disrupted. Something similar Kashyap has tried to show in the story of Sarita Pillai and Sushant Pillai.
The filmmaker said, “The film was always about money and marriage, but it was only when we were shooting the film that demonetization took place and it had to be a part of the film. And it was interesting to keep the film in that period So that it is not completely absurd and it looks more meaningful. Due to the demonetization, the film suddenly finds a good foundation. ”
‘Choked: Money Speaks’ is the story of a middle-class housewife. This is the story of how demonetization changes her life. It also sheds light on how she is helping her unemployed husband.
The filmmaker, known for films such as ‘Black Friday’, ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, ‘Dev D’, and ‘Ugly’, claimed, “Go away from what I normally do with this film. Was trying. ”
Kashyap said, “My film making process is also changing because the idea of someone else in the last three films that I did was not me and in fact, it is sometimes a big help.”
‘Choked: Paisa Bolta’ will stream on Netflix from June 5.
