Cyclone Yaas : Flights cancelled, Wheels of trains gripped by tracks in Kolkata

Kolkata : Following the arrival of the cyclone ‘Yaas’ at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, all flights will be suspended from 8.30 am to 8.45 pm on Wednesday night. In addition, the railways have also chained the wheels of the trains with track.

Kolkata Airport’s official Twitter account tweeted, “In view of the weather warning by @Indiametdept over #CycloneYaas, flight operations at #KolkataAirport will be suspended from 0830 IST upto 1945 IST on 26.05.2021.We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused.”

Apart from this, IndiGo Airlines also tweeted and informed about their flight services affected due to the cyclone.

Cyclone Yaas will affect coastal areas in Odisha and Bengal. Due to this, many districts of both states will have high winds and high tides will come in the sea. People living in coastal areas in both states have been evacuated to safer places. The Bengal Forest Department has formed 16 teams in three districts for relief and rescue operations. A top official gave this information on Tuesday. He informed that these groups have been formed in Kolkata, North and South 24 Parganas.

In the wake of this cyclone, the Bengal government has evacuated more than 9 lakh people to safe places. Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Director General Dr Mritunjay Mohapatra said that Yaas has turned into a very severe cyclonic storm on Tuesday evening and Chandbali is expected to suffer the most damage. He said that it would have a severe impact six hours before and after the cyclone hit.

All the concrete preparations have been made before the storm knocks in Bengal. In order to avoid any unforeseen event, the railways have gripped the wheels of some trains to the railway tracks with the help of thick chains at Sealdah railway station in Kolkata. In addition, railway staff at Howrah’s Shalimar railway station also gripped the wheels of the train to the tracks.
