Dr Anil Awachat passes away at 78
Pune : Policenama online – Muktangan Rehabilitation Centre director, journalist, writer and social worker Dr Anil Awachat passed away after a prolonged illness at 78 on Thursday (January 27). He wrote on various topics and penned down over 22 books.
Dr Awachat, along with his wife Dr Sunanda, started the first de-addiction centre in the country. His unique de-addiction method is followed across the world. He was fond of children and used to teach them Origami.
Dr Awachat was born at Otur in Pune district. He was a graduate of the BJ Medical College, Pune. He participated in many movements during his college days. He worked in Purnia district in Bihar as a social worker. He wrote his first book ‘Purnia’ in 1969 based on his experiences there. Though he was a journalist, he did not like professionalism in journalism and used to vehemently put forth issues faced by the downtrodden sections of society.
Muktangan and PL Deshpande
Dr Anil Awachat studied cocaine addiction and its impact on the young generation. He spoke to leading Marathi litterateur PL Deshpande about this and expressed his wish to do some work in this area. PL Deshpande supported Dr Anil and Dr Anita Awachat’s concept of Muktangan by donating Rs 25 lakh. Thus, their de-addiction movement spread across India.
Dr Awachat received various awards for his work, including a National Award (2013) by the President, Maharashtra Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award (2018), Fergusson Gaurav Sanman (2017), etc.
