Flood Situation in Assam, Bihar Frightening, 37 Lakh People Affected

New Delhi : Floods in Assam and Bihar have worsened the situation and affected a population of about 37 lakh. Three more people died in flood-related incidents in Assam. In Assam, 27 lakh people are affected by floods in 33 districts. There have been cases of deaths from Barpeta, Kokrajhar and Morigaon. This year 122 people have died in the state due to floods and landslides. About one million people have been affected by floods in Bihar. Many areas were submerged as the Gandak River embankment broke at three places. However no death has been reported.

According to the state disaster management department, 9.60 lakh people have been affected by floods in 529 panchayats of 74 blocks in 10 districts. Torrential rains in Arunachal Pradesh cut off the connectivity of many districts and created a flood-like situation. The landslide cut off contact in West Siang district amid rains. President Ramnath Kovind spoke to Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and expressed solidarity with the affected people of the state. He also dispatched nine trucks carrying the Red Cross relief material from the Rashtrapati Bhavan to the people affected by floods and COVID-19 from Assam, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

The Meteorological Department said that heavy rainfall is expected between 26-28 July in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and between 27 and 29 July in Punjab and Haryana. In Bihar, West Champaran, East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Shivhar, Supaul, Kishanganj, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Gopalganj and Khagaria are affected by the floods. The Meteorological Department has said that rain is forecast in North India including Delhi-NCR on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The maximum temperature in Punjab and Haryana was around normal. Chandigarh recorded a maximum temperature of 34.9 degrees Celsius.
