India reports 24,882 new COVID-19 cases, 140 deaths in last 24 hours

As many as 24,882 new COVID-19 cases and 140 deaths were reported from India in the last 24 hours, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare informed on Saturday.
The total recoveries in India are at 1,09,71,347, active cases are 2,02,022 and the Covid-19 death toll is 1,58,446. The total case tally in the country is 1,13,33,728.
The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 1,09,71,347, while the case fatality rate stands at 1.40 percent, the data stated.
With the second phase of the nation-wide vaccination drive underway, as many as 2,82,18,457doses of the vaccine have been administered so far. India began the world’s largest COVID-19 vaccination program on January 16, 2021.
Six States – Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Karnataka, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, continue to record high number of cases in the country.
The health ministry stressed that more than 70 percent of the deaths occurred due to comorbidities. “Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of Medical Research,” the ministry said on its website, adding that state-wise distribution of figures is subject to further verification and reconciliation.
On Thursday, 23,285 new confirmed cases were registered across the country, of which, Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Karnataka, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu cumulatively accounted for 85.6% of the new infections. Maharashtra reported the highest daily new cases at 14,317 (61.48% of the daily new cases), followed by Kerala with 2,133 while Punjab reported 1,305 new cases.
