Pune: Policenama online – Maharashtra Auto Rickshaw Licenses | In the coming days, no licences will be issued for new autorickshaws. The number of rickshaws has increased in the state and this decision has been taken to control their increasing number. The Transport Department has sent a proposal to the Union Ministry of Roads and Transport. If the ministry gives its nod, then issuing of licences to new autos will be stopped. The number of autorickshaws has increased manifold in the state. Although, rickshaws are playing an important role in public transport, their proliferation is leading to increasing pollution. The increasing number of rickshaws hampers promotion of public transport. Due to a greater number of autos, the passengers travelling by other autos decline. As it is, due to autorickshws of online apps, the auto owners have to suffer losses. Hence, many auto unions are demanding that new licences should not be given.
Due to the continuous demand of auto unions, the Transport Department has prepared a proposal. The proposal has been sent to Union Ministry of Roads and Transport. The ministry is likely to take an early decision. After an order is issued by the ministry, a decision will be taken about the ban on autorickshaws.
Maximum number of autorickshaws in the state are in Pune. There are eight lakh autos in the state and 1 lakh autos are in Pune. In Pimpri Chinchwad, there are 32,500 autos. The effect of this decision is likely to affect those who want to enter the profession.
