Pimpri-Chinchwad: Sewage treatment plant discharges untreated waste water into river basin, Students lodge protest

Pimpri-Chinchwad : The sewage treatment plant at Pimple Nilakh had discharged sewage water into the river basin without any process under the name of maintenance and repair. Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation did not give any official permission to the contractor for maintenance and repair. However, between August 7 and October 8, the sewage was discharged into the river basin without any treatment. The students of Rayat Vidyarthi Parishad sat on a hunger strike in the pouring rain, pointing out that this posed a threat to life in the river basin.

The protesters had lodged a complaint against the municipal sewage treatment plant at Pimple Nilakh. In it, the wastewater from the sewage treatment plant was repeatedly discharged into the river basin without any treatment. The complaint was raised that it is a threat to life in the river basin. The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) had sought a written explanation from the NMC’s environment department after a complaint was lodged with the board’s e-mail. But, till date, the corporation has not given it. After this, a representative of Maharashtra Pollution Control Board visited the sewage treatment plant at Pimple Nilakh.

During this time, the protesters made various demands in this regard. The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation should run the water purification center at Pimple Nilakh at full capacity without leasing it to the contractor. Also, the issue of discharge of sewage into the river without any process during the period of two months from 7th August to 8th October should be thoroughly investigated and charges should be filed against the culprits. Vinay Engineering Pvt. Ltd. should be blacklisted. The bypass line at the water treatment plant at Pimple Nilakh should be completely removed. Demands include the suspension of Sanjay Kulkarni, an engineer in the environment department, for being responsible for the whole matter.
