Court pronounces death verdict for accused in child’s rape and murder case
Pune : Policenama online – Pune Crime | District Sessions Judge SA Deshmukh has pronounced death penalty for the accused in the case of kidnap and rape of a two-a-half-year-old girl. The incident took place in February 2021 in Velhe taluka in Pune district. The judge announced his verdict on Monday. The incident had taken place in the limits of Velha police station of Pune rural police.
The accused has been identified as Sanjay Baban Katkar (28), a resident of Kadve, taluka Velha. This information was given by government lawyer Vilas Pathare.
On February 15, 2021, a two and a half-year-old girl who was playing in front of her house, had been kidnapped. An FIR had been registered at the Velhe police station. The police started the investigation considering the seriousness of the case. Meanwhile, the police found the body of a little girl under a bridge on Malkhed Thoptewadi road in Haveli taluka. It became clear that the girl had been raped. The police formed search teams to arrest the culprit.
The rural police came to know that the crime had been committed by Sanjay Baban Katkar and he was hiding in a brick kiln at Nate in Raigad district. The rural police arrested him after laying a trap. He admitted committing the crime when he was questioned. The police registered charges like kidnapping, rape, POCSO and murder against the accused.
The accused was sentenced to death a year after the chargesheet had been filed. Seventeen witnesses were examined in the case and the testimony of a woman proved crucial.
