Pune News | Central Railway transports 1,540 bodies; Provides facility at a minimum cost as social responsibility


PUNE: Pune News | The Central Railway (CR) has transported 1,540 bodies in three years. The facility has been made available by the CR as a social responsibility and can be availed by paying a sum in the range of ₹1,000 to ₹1,500.

The cost of transporting bodies is very high. One has to pay a sum of minimum ₹5,000 to transport the body by an ambulance. This expenditure is beyond the limits of the common man. The cost of transporting the body to another state is extremely high.

The details of the deceased have to be registered in the parcel office. After completing the formalities and payment of charges, the body is kept in a SLR coach of a train. The coach is kept empty. Two SLR coaches are attached to mail and express trains in the front and back. Goods weighing up to four tonnes are transported through them. The Indian Railways gets a minimum income of ₹30,000 income. When a body is transported, a body is kept in a coach besides the engine. At that time, no other commodity is kept there. Hence, the Indian Railways don’t get the income of ₹30,000.

The weight of the boy is considered as 200 kg
It is necessary to pay the cost of four ticket to the city where the body is to be transported
The body should be in a coffin
Certificate of a doctor from a government hospital is must
NoC from local police

The Divisional Commercial Manager, Dr Ramdas Bhise, said, “The Indian Railways transport bodies for nominal charges without thinking about the revenue. We are trying to fulfil our social responsibility. Since transportation happens at a minimum cost, the service is useful for poor families.”
