Pune Airport’s New Cargo Terminal Stuck in Red Tape, Businesses Await Inauguration

Pune Airport

Pune: The completion of construction work on Pune Airport’s new cargo terminal has brought relief to businesses eagerly awaiting its inauguration. However, bureaucratic red tape has impeded the terminal’s operational status, leaving businesses to suffer from the suspension of international cargo for the past seven months. This delay has prompted a growing demand for the swift opening of the terminal.

The absence of a cargo terminal at Pune Airport has forced businesses to transport their goods from Mumbai if they wish to send them abroad. In January, the Civil Aviation Safety Department ordered the closure of cargo facilities at Pune Airport due to infrastructure defects and non-compliance with various conditions. Although SpiceJet and IndiGo were subsequently permitted to handle domestic cargo, international cargo operations remain suspended.

Pune Airport Director, Ajay Dhoke, disclosed that the necessary approval from the Civil Aviation Department for the new cargo terminal has yet to be received. Recent reports indicate that officials from the Civil Aviation Security Department recently conducted an inspection of the new cargo terminal, but it has not yet garnered their approval. Once the terminal receives the necessary clearance, it can be commissioned and commence operations.

Pune, situated in western Maharashtra, serves as a crucial air cargo hub. The closure of international freight traffic in Pune has compelled businesses to rely on Mumbai as an alternative. However, this option comes at a higher cost, presenting challenges for businesses already grappling with financial strains. Given the absence of an approved cargo terminal, it is crucial that any technical glitches or issues are promptly addressed and rectified.

The delay in inaugurating the new cargo terminal at Pune Airport has adversely affected not only businesses but also the region’s overall economic growth. Pune has been witnessing steady industrial and commercial expansion, and the availability of efficient cargo operations is vital for sustaining this growth. The new cargo terminal promises enhanced capacity and modern infrastructure, enabling seamless international cargo operations.

To expedite the process, it is imperative that the concerned authorities prioritize the necessary clearances and swiftly address any outstanding issues. The completion of the new cargo terminal signifies a significant investment in Pune’s aviation infrastructure and demonstrates the city’s growing prominence as an economic hub. Unlocking its potential will require the cooperation of all stakeholders involved.
