Pune | Pioneer restaurateur, Hotel Vaishali’s Jagannath Shetty passes away

Pune : Policenama online The pioneer of restaurant business in Pune and Hotel Vaishali owner Jagannath B Shetty passed away due to old age. He was 89. He was being treated in Prayag Hospital for the past few days, where he breathed his last. He is survived by a daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren.

 

Jagannath Shetty was born at Onimajalu Mane in Bailoor near Karkala in South Canara on October 8, 1932. At 13, he went to Kalyan to work with his uncle. At 17, he shifted to Pune in 1949 and became a Puneite. He started Café Madras restaurant in 1951. Later, he opened Madras Health Home, Vaishali Restaurant. Initially, Vaishali was a small restaurant. With hard work, he made Vaishali a household name. It became a meeting point for young and old alike. Celebrities frequently visit Hotel Vaishali.

 

The Pune Municipal Corporation has given its ‘Cleanest Kitchen’ award to Hotel Vaishali. Jagannath Shetty was awarded the prestigious Punyabhushan Award given by Tridal in 2000. He was also given the Udyam Award by the Chimanlal Govinddas Memorial Trust.

 

He had donated Rs 1 crore to the Chief Minister’s Fund during the pandemic.
