Pune Police Crime Branch | Right to Information activist Sudhir Alhat arrested for trying to extort Rs 50 lakh from a woman

Pune : Policenama online  The crime branch of the Pune police has arrested a Right to Information activist Sudhir Ramchandra Alhat for trying to extort Rs 50 lakh from a woman who had submitted a written complaint on a letterhead against a former police sub-inspector of the Deccan police station. Alhat was arrested on Wednesday night. An extortion case has been registered at Deccan police station against Subhash alias Anna Jeur, Nilesh Jagtap, Vivek Konde and Alhat.

A 48-year-old woman has filed a complaint with the Shivajinagar police station. The plaintiff had approached the activist after a case was filed against her husband at Deccan police station in 2018 and 2020. Alhat forced her to file a complaint against former PSI Sonavane on the letterhead by promising her that since he knew many senior police officers, he will ensure that she will get some money for the harassment.

Alhat called the plaintiff to his residence and tried to extort Rs 50 lakh to take back the complaint against Sonavane. He threatened to implicate her if she did not follow his instructions. The police registered a complaint after the extortion demand came to light. PSI Dattatraya Kale of unit 3 of crime branch is investigating the case.

Alhat had told the plaintiff that he had got 32 police officers suspended. The arrest of a RTI activist has created a flutter in the city.
