Pune: A woman was killed after a ready-mix cement tanker ran over her in front of Prayeja City in Vadgaon on Sinhagad Road on Thursday morning.

There are several ready-mix cement (RMC) plants in Dhayari and Vadgaon. Ready-mix cement tankers are run recklessly in and out of these plants. Sometimes drivers of such tankers were drunk, which caused accidents earlier also. A ready-mix cement tanker crushed a woman at an RMC plant near Prayeja City on Sinhagad Road at around 11 am on Thursday (June 6).

Local residents alerted the police about the incident, after which a police team arrived at the accident spot. Preliminary investigation revealed that the victim woman was a construction worker. A huge crowd gathered after the accident in the area. The tanker driver escaped, said local residents.

There are illegal ready-mix cement plants in the Prayeja City area on Sinhagad Road. Dust and loose gravel are spread on the roads in the area. This not only causes air pollution but is risky for commuters. Children are suffering from respiratory and eye ailments. Society residents said that there is a nexus between civic officials-employees and plant owners, who are pretending that there are no issues. They have filed several written complaints about this but nothing has been done yet.

Local residents have been writing and emailing since 2021 to local corporators, the mayor, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board and the municipal commissioner. They also staged an agitation but a new plant was set up in the area later, complained citizens.
