Pune | Rise in malnourished children puts health dept on its toes
Pune : Policenama online – A shocking revelation about increasing malnutrition among children in the district has set alarm bells ringing. A survey by health and women and child development department of Zilla Parishad found that 1,660 children in the rural areas of Pune are malnourished.
Health check-up of 2,12,318 children was done during the survey. Out of these, 1,289 children were marginally malnourished while 371 were severely malnourished. The administration assumed there was rise in health problems among children and women owing to pandemic, lockdown and excess rain in the district. Therefore, Chief Executive Officer Ayush Prasad directed health department and women and child development department to conduct the survey.
Accordingly, pregnant women, new mothers, teenagers and children were surveyed. The squad included medical officers, health workers from primary health centres, anganwadi sevikas and Arogya sevaks. The door to door survey is still on. Mothers of malnourished children are being counselled.
Method of survey
Anganwadi sevikas weigh children and then categorize them. Severely malnourished children are provided nutrition at anganwadi or at health centre for a month. The nutrition table for each child is prepared depending on their weight and height.
Zilla Parish CEO said Ayush Prasad said, “The administration will specially pay attention towards severely malnourished children. After the survey all such children will be provided proper nutrition to bring them in normal category.”
