Pune : Policenama online –  A serious issue has been noticed at the Lohegaon airport. Sewage water is accumulated in ditches at some distance from the runway. Birds gather around this place, which is a serious hazard for flights at the airport. The airport administration has brought this anomaly to the civic authorities’ notice.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken a serious note of the issue. It has decided to start the drainage pipeline project meant for the 11 merged villages from this place.

Civic and airport officials recently surveyed the area in and around the airport jointly. It was brought to their notice that there is a big ditch not far away from the runway, where aeroplanes land. Sewage water from the nearby area has accumulated there. Birds gather around this ditch to eat insects thriving in sewage water. Bird hits are a serious hazard for aeroplanes. The civic authorities should solve the sewage water problem. The airport authority officials brought this to their notice.

The civic officials have agreed to take immediate measures. Drainage pipeline works have started in the 11-merged villages within the city limits. The civic administration has decided to lay drainage pipeline in this area under this project. This was revealed by civic officials.

When contacted, PMC Drainage Department Superintendent Engineer Jagdish Khanore said, “The remaining parts of Lohegaon have been included in the PMC. These areas do not have underground drainages. Thus, sewage water is released in open and gets accumulated in ditches. These are breeding spots for insects. Birds feed on insects at these sites around the airport. Flights have been facing the danger of bird hits due to this. We decided, in a joint survey of the area, that the drainage pipeline work would be carried out. The work began a few days ago.”
