Pune University – SPPU News | Decrease in Admission Applications at Savitribai Phule Pune University Raises Concerns

Pune : Pune University – SPPU News | Savitribai Phule Pune University, one of the premier educational institutions in the region, has witnessed a noticeable decline in the number of admission applications for its academic courses. Compared to the previous year, there has been a reduction of nearly four thousand applications, with only 14,442 applications received for admission to 78 postgraduate courses this year. The university conducts entrance exams for admission to degree, postgraduate, and other programs.

This year, the entrance exams for degree and integrated courses have already taken place, and the admission process will be based on merit marks. Additionally, the admission process for certificate and diploma courses after 10th and 12th grade is currently underway. The total admission capacity for the university’s 78 courses is 2,795. The application deadline for these courses concluded on July 8. It is worth noting that last year, the university received over 18,200 applications for postgraduate courses, making this year’s decrease particularly significant. The university’s website has announced that the entrance exams for these courses will be held between July 22 and July 24.

Among the 78 postgraduate courses offered by the university, 25 courses have experienced a decline in admission applications, with only 334 students applying for them. Notably, courses such as Chemistry, Microbiology, and Computer Science have received a higher number of applications compared to other courses. However, statistics, physics, psychology, political science, and economics continue to be preferred choices among students.

While the response to regular courses at the university remains steady, there has been relatively low interest in some of the newer, non-traditional courses. In light of these developments, the university is considering extending the deadline for postgraduate admissions in order to encourage more applications and give prospective students an opportunity to explore a wider range of academic options.

The decline in admission applications raises concerns about the reasons behind this trend. Factors such as changing student preferences, job market dynamics, and the impact of the ongoing pandemic may have contributed to the decrease in applications. The university administration is working to analyze the situation and identify potential strategies to address the issue.
