Senior citizen sentenced to 15 years’ rigorous imprisonment in gangrape of mentally challenged woman

Pune : Policenama online Pune Crime News | Special Judge SB Salunkhe has sentenced a senior citizen to 15 years’ rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹20,000 for being involved in the gangrape of a mentally challenged woman. The DNA of the accused and the testimony of the victim recorded through a doctor proved crucial in the case. (Pune Crime News)

The convict has been identified as Balasaheb Govind Devde (73), a resident of Loni Kalbhor. During the trial, Vilas Patare and Pramod Bombatkar were the Special Public Prosecutors.

The victim was 35-year-old and was mentally challenged but still the accused and his aides had tried to rape her. Four people were made the accused in the case.

During the course of the trial, it was clear through the DNA test that Balasaheb Govind Devde had raped her. Doctors from Sassoon Hospital were summoned and her testimony was recorded through her gestures. The judge was informed in detail about what she wanted to convey. These two factors proved important.

Special Public Prosecutor Vilas Patare demanded that the accused should be awarded the strictest punishment and the judge sentenced him to 15 years’ of rigorous imprisonment. The case was investigated by the then API Suvarna Hulvan. Police Constable Lalita Kanvade, Police Naik Santosh Sonvane, policeman Sandip Dhumal played an important role under the guidance of senior PI DL Chavan of Loni Kalbhor police station. The other three accused were released for lack of evidence.
