Thane : Policenama online – The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has expedited the work on Metro 5 (Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan). After service is started, travel time between Thane and Kalyan will be reduced by a half hour.

Till date, MMRDA has completed 45 % work so far. The rest of the work will be completed in the next two years and the metro service will be operational, authority officials said.

The metro network is being woven to strengthen the transport system in the Mumbai metropolitan region. Under Metro-5, the 24.9 km long Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan work has been undertaken. Since its approval in October 2017, the work is being carried out in two phases.

In the phase-1, the total distance is 12.7 km from Thane to Bhiwandi, while in the phase-II Bhiwandi to Kalyan road is being constructed. Metro- 5 will continue from Kasheli Bay to Kalyan and this route is considered to be unique.

MMRDA commissioner V. R. Srinivas recently inspected and reviewed the work. He also instructed the contractor to speed up the work.

Metro-5 is expected to be completed by the end of 2022. However, work has been delayed due to Covid-19, lockdown and other technical issues. Now a work plan has been drawn up to complete this work in the next two years.

Srinivas said that 45 to 50 % work has been completed so far and the target is to complete the work in the next two years.

Metro 5 is expected to be completed by 2024. However, the work from Kalyan to Bhiwandi phase is likely to be difficult for MMRDA. There are many issues like land acquisition, encroachment, objections of citizens and local representatives.

When asked about challenges, Srinivas admitted that completing the project is going to be challenging. He further said that there are some problems in the second phase.

He further added that efforts are being made to move the project forward.
