Mumbai : Policenama online In the backdrop of the third wave of pandemic, it is said that the peak of the wave is over. In an interview with a Marathi TV news channel, State Health Minister Rajesh Tope on Saturday said, “Covid cases are still increasing in some parts of the State, including cities such as Nashik, Nagpur, Pune and Aurangabad. Cases are decreasing in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar. So, the peak of third wave is over.”

Tope said, “Cases are decreasing in cities; however, they are increasing in rural areas. However, patients are being discharged in 5-7 days. So, there is no need to worry about the affected people in rural areas.”

Some people are also taking off their masks as cases are dipping. Reacting to this behaviour, Tope said, ”We never said ‘Mask-free Maharashtra’. The danger of Covid is still not over. The task force will guide us in this regard. If we get guidance as to how long the restrictions would remain, people would feel relieved. Decisions have been made in this regard in countries such as England, Denmark and Holland. Do we have anything to learn from them? Do we need to change the protocol made in India? We have requested the Chief Minister to ask the ICMR about this. Hence, there is no talk of Mask-free Maharashtra at the moment.”

“The State Health Department has made all preparations to face the third wave. Beds are kept ready. However, 92-95% of the beds is still vacant. Of the positive patients, only 5-7% are hospitalised. The patients on oxygen and in ICU are merely 1%. Many patients are home-quarantined. So, there is no need to worry. However, Covid-19 danger is still not over. We have to take care,” he said.

Tope said WHO is studying the new variant, which is being talked about. It is said the new variant is dangerous. However, no patient of this variant is found anywhere. So, there is no need to worry.
