New Delhi : India is going to get a big responsibility in the World Health Organization (WHO) amid the ongoing war against Corona. Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan will be the next chairman of the 34-member Executive Board of the World Health Organization (WHO). Dr. Harsh Vardhan may take over on 22 May. He will replace Dr. Hiroki Nakatani of Japan.

The proposal to appoint India’s nominee was passed on Tuesday (May 19) at the World Health Organization meeting of 194 countries. On Tuesday, 194 countries of the World Health Assembly have signed a proposal to represent India on this global platform. Harshavardhan’s taking over was a mere formality when it was decided that he would be nominated by the WHO to the South-East Asia Group on behalf of India.

Last year, the South East Asia Group decided that this time the board chairman would be selected by India. According to officials, Harsh Vardhan will take up the post on 22 May. This position changes every year and last year it was decided that India would represent this board in the first year. According to the information, this is not a full-time responsibility and the Health Minister will only have to attend meetings.

The board meets twice a year and the main meeting usually takes place in January. While the second meeting takes place in May. The main function of the Executive Board is to provide appropriate advice for the decisions and decisions of the Health Assembly. The decision comes at a time when the US has been accusing WHO of colluding with China on the Coronavirus.
