Chandrayaan-3 Mission | India Aims for Lunar Landing and Join Elite Space Club

Chandrayaan-3 Mission | Indians take great pride in the successful launch of the Chandrayaan-3 mission on July 14, led by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The launch took place at 2.35 pm using the LMV launch vehicle.

Chandrayaan-3, aimed at a lunar landing, commenced its journey to the moon from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre. The lander is expected to complete its journey in approximately 42 days, navigating the complexities of space travel.

If ISRO achieves a successful mission with Chandrayaan-3, India will become part of an exclusive group of nations that have accomplished a soft landing on the Moon. The United States, the former Soviet Union, and China are the only countries that have achieved this feat. Notably, the United States and the Soviet Union encountered numerous failures before successfully landing on the Moon. China stands out as the sole country to achieve a successful lunar landing on its first attempt.

Following a successful lift-off and achieving the correct orbit around the Earth, Chandrayaan-3 has embarked on the initial stages of its mission. However, the spacecraft still has a long journey ahead. In the coming days, its orbit around the Earth will gradually become more eccentric with each revolution, eventually preparing for transfer to a lunar orbit. The spacecraft is expected to attempt a soft landing on the Moon’s surface approximately 42 days after the launch.

The Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft has effectively taken off from Earth and is now in orbit around the planet as it makes its way to the Moon. The mission involves several crucial milestones, including earth-bound manoeuvres, insertion into the lunar orbit, separation of the lander, a series of deboost manoeuvres, and a power descent phase to facilitate a gentle landing. P. Veeramuthuvel, the project director of the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft, provided these insights into the mission’s planned events.

The mission represents a significant achievement for India’s space exploration program. As the spacecraft progresses through its various phases, scientists and engineers at ISRO will closely monitor its performance and strive for a successful soft landing on the lunar surface. This ambitious endeavor reinforces India’s dedication to advancing space exploration and its desire to be recognized as a global player in lunar missions alongside other pioneering nations.
