Pune: On the backdrop of the third phase of voting for Lok Sabha elections in 2024, a shocking incident has been revealed in Pune’s Maval Lok Sabha constituency, where a car carrying cash worth Rs 30 lakh was captured on Thursday morning. This action was taken by the static surveillance team (SST), established by the Election Commission of India.

In this regard, a news agency reported that a car carrying cash worth Rs 30 lakh was captured by the static surveillance team. After the checking, the cash seized in this action was handed over to the Income Tax Department. A video of this action has also surfaced on social media in which police authorities and SST squad officials are seen inspecting the car, from which cash has been seized.

To prevent misuse of money expenditure and to monitor anti-social activities on the eve of elections, the Election Commission formed dedicated special teams that constantly monitor the distribution of money and the smuggling of illegal arms and liquor in constituencies during elections. One such team is the Static Surveillance Team (SST), consisting of a magistrate and three or four policemen on each team.

These teams work at designated checkpoints. Some SSTs may also have CPF personnel, depending on the sensitivity of the area. The SSTs have set up checkpoints at various major roads and borders in the district and state to monitor the movement of large amounts of cash, illicit liquor, bribes, arms, ammunition, and other anti-social elements. Furthermore, the entire action gets recorded as evidence.

Meanwhile, earlier, the Pimpri Chinchwad police seized Rs 50 lakh in cash at the Urse toll booth on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway. During the inspection of vehicles at the Urse toll booth by the police team of Shirgaon police station, they found cash in an SUV going from Mumbai to Pune. After that, the police have started the action according to the model code of conduct that was implemented after the announcement of the program of the Lok Sabha elections.
