Policenama online – Local body polls in Maharashtra will be held without reservation for other backward classes (OBC), the Supreme Court (SC) ordered on Monday. After the Supreme Court order, it has been cleared that OBC will have contested elections in open category. State government has got set back after the Supreme Court decision.
After the SC order, the state election commission will have to take election on 105 Nagar Panchayats without 27 per cent OBC reservation and polling will be held on 21 December.
During the hearing on the 27 per cent political reservation petition, SC rejected the demand of Maharashtra state government to provide empirical data by the Central government. State government had requested a stay on the election for three months to collect empirical data.
SC denied giving a stay to the election and interfering in the election process. SC mentioned in order that the State Election commission will conduct polls as per scheduled and state election commission will issue notification in a week that OBC will have to contest the election from open category.
On the SC order, State OBC leader and Cabinet minister Chhagan Bhujbal said, “Central government said in the court that they have economically backward class data. We don’t have separate data from OBC. SC denied giving a stay to the election. Now, OBC will have to contest elections from open category. SC will conduct hearings on 17 January 2022 till date we will carry out work as per election schedule. Polls will conduct 21 December 2021
