Thinker, former minister Prof ND Patil passes away at 93

Kolhapur : Policenama online Peasants and Workers Party (PWP) leader and former State Cooperation Minister Prof Narayan Dnyandev alias ND Patil passed away here at a private hospital following a brief illness.

 

He was a member of Maharashtra Legislature for four terms and also served as the state cooperation minister during 1978-1990. He worked throughout his life for peasants, mill workers and casual labourers.

 

He was born in Dhavali (Nagaon) in Sangli district in a farming family. Patil completed his postgraduation in Economics from the then Pune University in 1955. Later, he did LLB too. He taught at Chhatrapati Shivaji College, Satara during 1954-57.

 

He was the head of Earn and Learn scheme and was also the rector. Patil was appointed the principal of the Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil College in Islampur in 1960. He also held various positions at the Shivaji University, where he worked as the Dean during 1976-78.

 

Patil was the chairman of Rayat Shikshan Sanstha since 1990.

 

Prof ND Patil was honoured with several awards. He wrote several books and held important positions throughout his 70-year long public life. He joined the PWP in 1948. He became general secretary of Mumbai Girni Kamgar Sanghatana in 1957. From 1960 to 1982 he was an MLC. He was also the general secretary of PWP from 1969 to 2010. He represented the Kolhpaur assembly segment during 1985-90.

 

Prof Patil also led the Maharashtra-Karnataka border dispute movement and was the member of Maharashtra State Border Dispute Committee.
