At least two killed, 664 injured in 5.9-magnitude quake in NW Iran
Tehran, Jan. 29 (UNI) – Quake News | At least two people were killed and 664 others injured in a 5.9-magnitude earthquake that jolted West Azarbaijan province in northwestern Iran on Saturday night, local media reported.
The quake occurred at 9:44 p.m. local time (1814 GMT) at a depth of 7 kms, with its epicenter at Khoy County, said the media reports.
Several aftershocks occurred after the main quake, with the biggest one measuring 4.2-magnitude, said the Iranian Seismological Center.
The earthquake also led to a power blackout in Khoy County.
According to reports from the earthquake-affected areas, the extent of damage in rural areas was estimated to be severe.
This was the province’s second major earthquake in two weeks. A 5.4-magnitude quake struck Khoy County on Jan. 19, injuring over 190 people.
