Washington, Dec 15 (UNI)- Former FBI Special Agent Charles McGonigal has been sentenced to more than four years in prison for aiding a Russian billionaire businessman in his efforts to be taken off a US sanctions list, a court official told Sputnik.

“The sentence was 50 months imprisonment, a $3,000 fine and three years of supervised release,” the court official said on Thursday.

McGonigal, 55, was sentenced for aiding Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska, who wanted his name to be removed from the US sanctions list. McGonigal was also accused of hiding $225,000 in payments from an Albanian agent.

In August, McGonigal pleaded to one count of conspiring to launder money.

McGonigal was indicted in January on charges of money laundering and violating US sanctions for working for Deripaska to remove him from the sanctions list and to investigate a rival.

McGonigal was the special agent in charge of the FBI’s counterintelligence division in New York before retiring in 2018.
