Gujarat CM renames dragon fruit as ‘Kamalam’
While the name resembles BJP symbol, CM Rupani said changing the name has no political motives
GANDHINAGAR: Indian ministers are taking decisions of renaming places whereas Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has decided to change the name of a fruit.
Chief Minister of Gujarat has changed the name of dragon fruit. The minister renamed the fruit as ‘Kamalam’, also the government has applied for a patent for the name ‘Kamalam’ to modify the glossary of dragon fruit.
Dragon fruit is largely sprouted in Kutch, Navsari, and distinct parts of Saurashtra because of which the state government decided to patent the name of the fruit.
According to the information, the government has ruled to change the name of the fruit because they think it is not a proper name for an Indian fruit and also the name resembles as it is based from China.
In the year 2020, India had clashes with China due to which Indian soldiers died, so changing the name of the fruit is to give the message of boycotting China.
The name ‘Kamalam’ is being derived from the flower lotus as the farmers believe that the fruit resembles Lotus because of which the name is renamed from dragon fruit to ‘Kamalam’.
Lotus (kamal) is the symbol of BJP. Also, the Gujarat party unit headquarters is with the name Shri Kamalam and the renamed name of dragon fruit is also ‘Kamalam’.
Clarifying on this, the Gujarat Chief Minister in a statement said, “Renaming the fruit has no political connection at all and dragon fruit is the most expensive fruit available in the market.”
Dragon fruit, also known as pitaya or the strawberry pear, is a beautiful tropical fruit that is sweet and crunchy. The plant is a type of cactus of the genus Hylocereus, which includes about 20 different species. Dragon fruit was a popular pre-Columbian fruit in tropical regions of the Americas and the Caribbean.
