New Delhi : The Ministry of Human Resource Development now has been renamed as the Ministry of Education. With the release of President Ram Nath Kovind’s notification, now the Ministry of Human Resource Development has been renamed as Ministry of Education. The Union Cabinet approved the new education policy on 29 July. Also, the name of the Ministry of Human Resource Development was changed to the Ministry of Education.

The work was completed after President Kovind issued a notification regarding change of name. The Narendra Modi government had tasked a committee headed by former ISRO chairman K Kasturirangan to formulate a new national education policy. The committee had first proposed to rename the ministry.

In the year 2018, Ram Bahadur Rai, Chairman of the Indira Gandhi National Center for the Arts and also the Chairman of the Joint Organization Committee of the Conference on Academic Leadership on Education for Resurgence, had given this idea. Earlier the Ministry of Human Resource Development was the Ministry of Education. In 1985, the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi changed its name to the HRD Ministry. PV Narasimha Rao became the first Human Resource Development Minister in the Rajiv Gandhi cabinet.

On the other hand, after the PM’s stand on the implementation of the new education policy, the Ministry of Education has now fully engaged to take the policy forward rapidly and has started discussions with the states. It will not be limited to discussion only, but a plan will be sought from all the states. As such, the policy is difficult to implement without the active participation of the states.
