MLA Siddharth Shirole | MLA Siddharth Shirole Urges Government to Address Rising Cybercrime

Mumbai: MLA Siddharth Shirole | With the alarming increase in cybercrime cases and the financial exploitation of citizens, MLA Siddharth Shirole highlighted the urgency of addressing this growing issue in the legislative session on Wednesday. He urged the government to take cybercrime complaints seriously and to promptly take action to prevent such incidents.

MLA Shirole brought to the House’s attention the concerning fact that the cyber department of the police has received over 700 complaints this year, yet only 25 of them have been filed for investigation.

He further elaborated on some distressing incidents, like a 26-year-old girl from Chatushringi area in Pune, who received a call from an unknown person claiming that narcotics were found in a parcel addressed to her. The caller instructed her to inform the police immediately. Taking advantage of her distress, the caller convinced her to install the Skype app on her phone and proceeded to misuse her personal information, swindling her out of seven lakhs.

In another case, a 42-year-old woman from Baner was duped of Rs 1 lakh when someone impersonating Mumbai’s cyber DCP contacted her.

Similarly, a 28-year-old girl from Balewadi received a call from a fake courier company, claiming there were drugs in her parcel. The caller suggested connecting her to the police for verification, gaining remote access to her phone and transferring Rs 4 lakh 80 thousand without her knowledge.

MLA Shirole’s speech shed light on the gravity of cybercrime and the devastating consequences it can have on innocent victims. He called for immediate attention from the government to protect citizens from falling prey to such fraudulent activities.
