New Delhi : Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athawale on Sunday lobbied for a caste-based census in the country, which would help the needy get social, economic and educational benefits. Union Minister Ramdas Athawale told reporters that caste based census is needed to ascertain community wise population, it will help the needy to get social, economic and educational benefits.

The Union Minister also stressed on increasing the reservation so that socially and economically backward people can take advantage of it. He said that the reservation limit should not exceed 50 per cent as per the rules, but there is a need to increase the quota for social justice. Also said that he has had talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard.

The purpose of introducing reservation was to empower the people socially and economically

Athawale also told that the purpose of introducing reservation was to empower people socially and economically, but people who are affluent are mostly using it. He said that such a trend needs to be stopped. Earlier this month, on July 5, the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly passed a resolution requesting the Center to provide the 2011 census data so that the State Backward Classes Commission could prepare an empirical data on the OBC population, aimed at the community in the local bodies.

On the other hand, the opposition party BJP, while opposing this move, termed it as politically motivated and alleged that the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition government is abdicating its responsibility on the issue of reservation. The resolution moved by Nationalist Congress Party leader and state Food and Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal in the assembly was passed by voice vote amid an uproar by BJP members.
