PUNE : Cyclone Biporjoy | Biparjoy cyclone is moving towards the Gujarat coast. It is expected to make landfall on Thursday from 4 pm to 8 pm on Thursday in the northern part of Jakhu port. The Director General of IMD, Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, said that the cyclone has proved complementary for the monsoon.

Speaking at the online press conference organised in New Delhi, Mohapatra said, “The cyclone is expected to make landfall on Thursday from 4 pm to 8 pm on Thursday in the northern part of Jakhu port. The wind speed is likely to be 150 km per hour. The Kutch region will bear the brunt of high winds and heavy rain. Along with Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Morbi, Porbandar, Rajkot will witness winds having speed of 125 to 135 km per hour. The speed of the winds can increase up to 145 km per hour. Kutch and Devbhumi Dwarka may experience maximum damage. There is a possibility of rain in other areas of Gujarat. The southern part of Rajasthan may experience heavy rain.

The cyclone will make landfall on Thursday evening at Jakhu port. Later, the speed of the winds will reduce and the effect of the cyclone will be over. The effect of the cyclone would be till June 18. From June 18 to 21, the monsoon winds will make rapid progress and cover the entire south India. The monsoon which arrived late in Kerala, has moved ahead fast because of the cyclone. After the effect of the cyclone is over, the speed of the monsoon winds will increase. If the cyclone had moved towards Oman, the monsoon winds would have faced an obstruction.

However, since the cyclone is moving towards the coastal areas, there will be good rain in some parts of the country. After the arrival of the southwest monsoon in the country, till it goes away, the rain in the country is considered as southwest monsoon. During this period, even if it rains due to cyclone, storm and local weather effect, it is considered as southwest monsoon, Mohapatra said.
