Mumbai : A nine-member committee has claimed in its report that the Kanjurmarg Metro car shed will save the state Rs 1,580 crore. The state government had set up a nine-member committee headed by state chief secretary Sanjay Kumar to study the metro car shed. The construction of a car shed on the Kanjurmarg site will save the state Rs 1,580 crore in land cost and construction cost, the committee said in its report. So, the space at Kanjurmarg is bigger than the space at Aarey. Only 30 metros can stand in Aarey’s car shed. The committee said in its report that 55 metros can be built in the space at Kanjurmarg.

What exactly is the dispute over the location of Kanjurmarg?
As soon as the decision was taken to move the car shed of Metro 3 from Aarey to Kanjurmarg, the Central Government had also claimed ownership of this land on Kanjurmarg. The board had said that legal action would be taken against anyone who tried to encroach on the land.

Meanwhile, a builder has also taken the land from Mithagara on rent basis a few years ago. Mahesh Kumar Garodia has sent a notice to Mumbai Suburban District Collector Milind Borikar stating that the excavation work for the Metro car shed has been stopped immediately.

The Garodia group says it has leased about 500 acres of land in Kanjur village. It also includes land taken for a metro carshed. Therefore, the order issued by Milind Borikar to give 102 acres of land to MMRDA should be canceled immediately. In this regard, Garodia has challenged the Centre’s decision to cancel his contract in the High Court in 2005. In which the High Court has given relief to Garodia and allowed him to continue his claim till a final decision is taken on those lands.
