Maharashtra State Election Commission will make changes in ward delimitation draft

Pune : Policenama online The Maharashtra State Election Commission (SEC) will itself incorporate suggested changes in the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) ward delimitation draft. The PMC administration’s views will be considered, said sources.

Thus, political interference in the ward delimitation process under the guise of changes at the civic body-level will be checked.

The PMC administration has prepared a draft of delimitation plan for the three-member ward system. The draft was presented to the SEC last week with 57 wards having three-member system while one ward with two-member system.

The SEC found 28 major anomalies in the draft. It had suggested changes, which were to be made by the PMC. However, the sources said that the SEC will make those changes itself.

The sources said PMC officers will be consulted only for making changes to overcome the geographical hindrances like rivers, roads, mountains, and canals. Now, it is clear that changes in the delimitation process will be made by the SEC. It is quite possible that all the wards will be affected while implementing the suggestions made by the SEC. So, it is hoped that it will curb politicians from interfering in the ward delimitation process.

The suggestions will change the draft radically. Hence, discussions are on that the State Election Commission may appoint an independent officer for this purpose.
