Pimpri: Pune Health News | The Coronavirus infection started spreading in 2020. However, it has still not been eradicated. All the countries across the world have been affected by the pandemic. The infection claimed lakhs of lives and its after-effects can be felt even today. The number of patients with respiratory tract illnesses has increased. This has been revealed in the Environment Status Report (ERS) released by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC).

The ERS report warns of increasing traffic problems with the growing number of vehicles. It confirms rising sound, air and water pollution in the industrial township. Polluted rivers have become breeding grounds of mosquitoes, which are spreading vector-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue and chikungunya. The report also exposes the health department’s laxities.

The organistion called Skylab has prepared the report. It is mandatory for every civic body to prepare the ESR report before July 31 every year. Hence, previous year’s report is copy-pasted and presented as current year’s report by making a few superficial changes. This practice has always been criticised. However, this report will show the way for the city’s sustainable and environment development, said Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Shekhar Singh.

The ERS states that 89.22 pc of the city’s population is literate, out of which male are 92.41 pc while females are 85.37 pc. It claims that the strength in the municipal schools has increased. The level of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the city air has gone up while the noise level in the silent zones and residential zones is more than the permissible limits.

It increases during the festival season. The report confirms that pollution in the Pavana and Indrayani rivers has increased. Sewerage is discharged into the Pavana river from nullahs while industrial units are releasing pollutants into the Indrayani river.
