Pune: MCOCA invoked against Amit Nana Chavan gang, 15th such action this year

Pune: Amit Nana Chavan and his woman accomplice have been booked under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) for stealing ornaments of women in crowded PMPML buses.

Commissioner of Police (CP) Amitesh Kumar ordered the action, which is the 15th such action by the Pune Police this year.

The complainant woman was travelling by a PMPML bus to Chinchwadgaon on February 7. Amit Chavan and his woman accomplice cut a golden bangle worn by the complainant and tried to escape. However, co-passengers caught both of them and handed them over to the police. A case was registered at the Shivajinagar Police Station in this regard.

Amit Nana Chavan (27), a resident of Hadapsar, and Neha Baban Sonawane (20), a resident of Nigdi, have been arrested. Chavan has committed various offences alone and as a part of the criminal syndicate. Serious offences such as theft, robbery, dacoity, causing injury and looting at the point of a weapon, illegal possession of arms and threatening to kill have already been registered against him.

A proposal under sections 3(1) (ii), 3(2), 3(4) of the MCOCA 1999 was prepared based on the offence registered at the Shivajinagar Police Station and was sent to Addl CP Pravinkumar Patil, who scrutinized the proposal and approved it. ACP Sainath Thombre attached with the Vishrambaug Police Station is investigating further.

The action was taken under the guidance of CP Amitesh Kumar, Joint CP Praveen Pawar, Addl CP Pravinkumar Patil, DCP Sandeep Singh Gill and ACP Sainath Thombre. A police team comprising Sr PI Chandrashekhar Sawant, API Kailas Daberao, PSI Ajit Bade, police personnel Santosh Memane, Rohit Zambre, Dilip Nagare, Nalini Kshirsagar, and Swaleha Shaikh took the action.
