Pune Plastic Waste | Pune, known for its bustling urban landscape, faces a significant waste management challenge with the city generating approximately 2200 tonnes of waste daily. Among this staggering amount, around 400 tonnes consist of plastic waste, posing a severe threat to the environment. One of the major contributors to this plastic waste is plastic bottles.

In response to this pressing issue, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has implemented various measures to address plastic waste management effectively. The PMC is actively involved in the processing of plastic waste and has undertaken awareness programs to educate residents about the importance of waste segregation.

Under the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016, waste segregation has been made mandatory in Pune. This crucial step encourages citizens to separate different types of waste, including plastic, organic, and recyclable materials. Simultaneously, the PMC has taken a firm stance against improper disposal practices. Dumping or burning garbage in open areas is strictly prohibited.

To enforce these regulations, the PMC has been levying fines on individuals who illegally dispose of plastic waste in public spaces. Recent data reveals that fines amounting to a significant Rs 37 lakh 15 thousand have been imposed on offenders. This strict enforcement aims to deter individuals from engaging in illegal disposal practices and emphasizes the importance of responsible waste management.
