Pune PMC News | Improved Access to Pune Airport: Municipal Corporation’s Plan for Alternative Routes
Pune : Pune PMC News | The Municipal Corporation has submitted a proposal to the Defense Department to close the existing road to Lohgaon in order to extend the runway of Pune Airport. The proposal includes the development of two alternative roads that will not affect the Barmashel slum and ensure the feasibility of the airport runway.
The runway at Lohgaon (Pune) Airport is set to be extended, and as part of the expansion plans, the Municipal Corporation and the Air Force have agreed to close the existing road from Wickfield to Lohgaon. Currently, this road is the primary route connecting Vimannagar and Yerawada to Lohgaon. Consequently, the need for an alternative road has been recognized to address the transportation requirements of the area.
The Road Department of the Municipal Corporation, in collaboration with the Air Force, conducted a site visit and inspection to assess the situation. Local MLA Sunil Tingre advocated for the proposal of an alternative road that would not disrupt the Barmashell slum. As a result, the administration has prepared two alternative road proposals, both with a width of 24 meters. One option spans half a kilometer, while the other extends to one kilometer. These proposals have been submitted to the Defense Department for consideration. The Road Department has emphasized that further actions will be taken once permission is granted by the defense authorities.
Let’s take a look at the two road options:
Option 1: This route is one kilometer long and follows a path from 509 Chowk along the Barmashel slum, running adjacent to the Defense Department’s wall and connecting to the original road from the mine to Kalvadavasti.
Option 2: This route covers a distance of one and a half kilometers, starting from the open space of Kendriya Vidyalaya I. It connects to the original road from the mine to Kalvad along the defense wall.
With these proposed alternative roads, travelers can access Lohgaon by following the road leading from 509 Chowk towards the Barmashel slum, which further connects to the DP road leading to Dhanori. This new route allows for direct travel from Yerawada to Dhanori, Porwal road, and eventually Lohgaon.
