Pune-Satara | Shortage of strawberries during Christmas season

Pune/Satara : Policenama online – During the peak winter season, there is an acute shortage of strawberries. The untimely rain in the first week of December damaged the strawberry crop which has led to the shortage. Since the demand is more than the supply, the price has also gone up.

During the Christmas time, the supply of strawberries increases and there is huge demand from all over the country for strawberries from Wai, Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar. The rains have played a spoilsport this year and there is a shortage of good quality strawberries in the market. The supply has increased in the last four to five days but it is still less than the demand, said trader Subhash Raut who is based in Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard.

The unseasonal rains in the first week of December heavily damaged the crop at Mahabaleshwar, Wai, Javali and Koregaon. The strawberry plant is delicate and the damaged plants were abandoned by the farmers. The arrival of strawberries has started due to the fall in the temperatures but it is less than the usual.

The price of strawberries has increased by Rs 100 in a week. A tray of strawberry based on the quality is being sold in the range of Rs 250 to Rs 325. A tray has eight small enclosures. Strawberries in an enclosure are sold in the retail market for Rs 50 to Rs 60.
