Pune | Very rare Tundra Bean Goose sighted first time in Maharashtra at Bhigwan
Pune : Policenama online – A very rare duck species ‘Tundra Bean Goose’ is sighted in the Ujani dam at Bhigwan (Pune). Ornithologists said this is the first sighting of the bird in Maharashtra. Birdwatchers and photographers are celebrating.
Birds migrate from Siberia and other regions to India during the winter. Their feed is available in abundance at the Ujani dam near Bhigwan. Birdwatchers, photographers, and citizens flock to the dam during the winter.
The lone Tundra Bean Goose has arrived, along with Bar-headed Geese, this year. Earlier, the bird was spotted at Nainital in Uttarakhand in 2011. Now, it has been spotted in Bhigwan in 2021.
“The bird belongs to the duck family. It is dark gray-brown. It has an orange patch on its bill and has orange legs. It is currently being spotted in a flock of Bar-Headed Geese. There is no earlier record of its spotting in Maharashtra. It was spotted twice in India in the past,” said birdwatcher Sachin Pawar.
Senior ornithologist Dr Satish Pande said, “Tundra Bean Goose is a very rare migratory bird. It is called vagrant goose in English. It migrates to water bodies. The bird is fond of marshland. It is pleasant news that it is sighted in Bhigwan.”
