Chennai, Feb 24 (UNI) – CM M.K.Stalin | In yet another brazen attack, the 2nd in a week, six Tamil Nadu fishermen were attacked by the Sri Lankan Navy personnel, following which Chief Minister M.K.Stalin strongly condemned it and wrote to External Affairs Minister Dr.Jaishankar to put an end to such attacks through diplomatic channels.

He urged Dr Jaishnakar to take this up strongly with the Sri Lankan Government and also requested him to prevail upon them through appropriate diplomatic channels for initiating strong and coordinated efforts at the highest level to stop attacks on our Indian fishermen.

In a Demi-Official letter to Dr Jaishankar, copies of which were released to the media here, he said “With a deep sense of anguish, I write this to intimate you about yet another incident of attack by the Sri Lankan Navy on six Indian fishermen yesterday.”

“This has happened within few days after the recent incident of attack on our fishermen by some Sri Lankan nationals on February 15”, he said. The six fishermen belonging to Tharangambadi in Mayiladuthurai district had ventured into the sea for fishing on February21 from Tharangambadi fishing hamlet. While the fishermen were engaged in fishing in the traditional sea waters, they were brutally attacked with iron rods by the Sri Lankan Navy personnel at around 4.30 a.m. yesterday.

They have also taken away the fishing tools, engine, two batteries and GPS equipment, Mr Stalin said. The five fishermen injured in the attack have been admitted in Government hospital, Tharangambadi for treatment, he pointed out. Observing that this attack was a blatant violation of all international norms and conventions, the Chief Minister said “the Sri Lankan Navy continues to infringe upon the traditional rights of our fishermen in the Palk Bay area and causes severe injuries and economic losses to our fishermen frequently.”

Mr Stalin said the brazen acts of violence by the Sri Lankan Navy are shocking and condemnable. “As you are aware, our fishermen are solely dependent on fishing for their livelihood and the frequent attacks on them instills fear and panic among the fishing hamlets”, he said and urged Dr Jaishankar to take this up strongly with the Sri Lankan Government and also requested him to prevail upon them through appropriate diplomatic channels for initiating strong and coordinated efforts at the highest level to stop attacks on our Indian fishermen.
