PCMC Water Supply | Pimpri Areas Face Muddy Water Woes Amidst Efforts to Improve Quality

Pimpri : PCMC Water Supply | Thergaon, Pimple Gurav, and other areas of the city are currently grappling with the issue of muddy water, leading residents to resort to costly filters or purchasing water jars to quench their thirst. The municipal administration assures that steps are being taken to address the turbidity problem. While the number of tankers has decreased in many societies, they have not been completely eliminated, leaving residents with the burden of tanker costs.

With delayed onset of rains this year, the municipality relies on drawing water from the Pavana riverbed in Rawet to meet the city’s water needs. The water is then treated at the Nigdi-Authority’s Water Purification Center before being supplied to the city. Currently, the Pavana Dam releases 510 million liters of water, the Andhra Dam contributes 50 million liters, and an additional 30 million liters are supplied by the MIDC.

Although the reduction in tanker rounds has brought some relief to societies, residents are still bearing additional expenses for water. Depending on the requirement, societies in areas like Wakad, Pimple Saudagar, Rawet, Tathwade, Kalewadi, and Rahatni need 1 to 2 tankers per day, with a maximum of 10 tankers. Similarly, societies in Chikhali, Charholi, and Doodulgaon have seen their tanker needs decrease from 5 to 10 per day to one to two tankers.

Residents are spending significant amounts on tanker costs, with an average monthly expense ranging from Rs. 60,000 to Rs. 72,000 for smaller societies requiring 2 tankers per day. Larger societies requiring 10 tankers per day face an average monthly cost of Rs. 3 lakh. Adding to the burden, some hotels are now supplying water bottles for drinking, citing the poor water quality, and passing the cost on to customers. Citizens argue that hotels should provide clean water free of charge.

While efforts are made to treat the water and reduce turbidity at the Nigdi-Authority water treatment center, some complaints of muddy water persist due to leakage in the water distribution system and other factors, according to the municipal administration.
