Pune: Pune Cyber Police Fugitive Nabbed After Dramatic Escape from Sassoon Hospital Custody

Pune: The Pune cyber police apprehended a cybercrime suspect, who had fled Sassoon Hospital while under Pune police custody, following a frantic manhunt spanning several days. The fugitive, identified as 25-year-old Marshal Lewis Leelakar of Akurdi, had been on the run after escaping from the hospital where he was receiving treatment while in police custody.

The incident began when Leelakar, arrested in connection with a cybercrime case involving threats to Swati Sharad Mohol, eluded authorities at Sassoon Hospital, sparking consternation within the Pune Police Force. Reacting swiftly, eight police teams were deployed to various locations in a bid to track down the absconding suspect. Finally, in the early hours of Saturday (17th), the cyber police succeeded in apprehending Leelakar from Yerwada.

Leelakar’s escape prompted a frenzy of investigative efforts, with both the crime branch and cyber police station launching an extensive search operation. Teams were dispatched to Neral and Karjat to scour potential hideouts for the fugitive. Ultimately, it was intelligence gathered by the Cyber Police Station team stationed in Yerawada that led to Leelakar’s arrest at his aunt’s residence in the late night.

The accused, who now faces charges under IPC Sections 506, 509, and Section 67 of the IT Act, had previously been arrested for threatening Swati Mohol through social media platforms. His arrest on February 9 marked the beginning of a tumultuous series of events, culminating in his daring escape from Sassoon Hospital. A case has been registered against him under IPC 500, 506, 509, and Information Technology Act 67 in the case of obscene abuse and comments. Pune police arrested him on Friday, February 9.
