Pune : Policenama online  The state government has decided to use solar street lights in rural areas of the State. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has also announced this. Now, many villages will use solar power. Rakh village in Purandar taluka has taken the lead in this regard. It will become the second village in the country and the first in the State to use solar power for streetlights.

This was revealed by Mahendra Mane, chairman, Rakh Vikas Society. Power generated during the day will be given to Mahadiscom under the ‘net metering’ scheme. Mahadiscom will supply power back for streetlights during night. Thus, around 1,500 units will be generated. Equal amount of power will be supplied by Mahadiscom to the village. Hence, the gram panchyat will not have to pay any money to Mahadiscom.

In all, 120 electricity poles are being set up in the village. The work is in its last stage. The Rs 52.50-lakh project is being implemented with funds provided by Baramati MP Supriya Sule and Purandar MLA Sanjay Jagtap.

Currently, electricity poles are being raised on the 2.5 km roads leading to village temples, health sub-centre, crematorium and Mane Vasti. “Gram panchayats cannot afford to pay power bills. Villages with less population and bigger geographical area get tax concessions. Pending bills have grown manifold. A solution to this is the solar project. The government should implement such projects in other villages also,” said Mane.
