Pune-Sharjah flight to take off on Friday evening, first international flight after 22 months from Pune airport
Pune : Policenama online – International flight operations will finally resume after 22 months from the Lohegaon airport. The first flight will take off to Sharjah under the Air Bubble agreement. International flight operations were suspended during the first wave of the pandemic.
Now that the third wave has just set in, this service will resume. Response of air passengers to the service remains to be seen. The Sharjah flight has got a slot and its time and date have also been fixed. It will take off at around 7 pm on Friday from the Lohegaon airport.
This is the first international flight under the Air Bubble agreement. Over one year and eight months, no international flight took off from the city airport. The airport administration took efforts to start the international flight operations under the special agreement and succeeded in it.
“The Air Bubble agreement was signed for the Pune-Sharjah flight. The first flight will leave from Pune on Friday. This is the first time that the special agreement has been used to resume an international flight service. Passengers will benefit immensely,” said Santosh Doke, Director, the Pune International Airport.
The Pune-Dubai flight was supposed to re-start in December. However, the central government banned international flights till January 31 in the backdrop of the Omicron virus. Hence, passengers will have to wait for this flight from the city. However, the Air Bubble agreement came as a relief, under which the Sharjah flight will be started from the city airport.
The Air Bubble agreement was signed by many countries, including India, to start international flights when nations across the world banned them during the first wave. Two countries agree to resume flights during the pandemic on certain conditions. This deal is called the Air Bubble agreement.
