Pune | Traffic police collect Rs 52 crore in four days from violators

PUNE: Policenama online After implementing Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019 in the state, Pune residents have been fined Rs 52 crore for violating traffic rules in the first four days (December 13 to 16).

In many cases, additional fines will be levied for each subsequent offence. In the coming days, Pune traffic police will collect crores of rupees by imposing new fines on people.

The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019 is being implemented in the state. The state transport department issued a notification on December 1 and the additional director general of police of the transport branch issued a notification on December 11 to implement the new fines.

After the new penalty amount was updated in the e-challan system, the implementation of the new rule started in the state from December 13.

The traffic police will collect fines on the refusal of police orders, unauthorised driving, driving without a licence, driving without a licence, racing vehicles, sounding the horn for no reason, driving uninsured vehicle, speed limit violation, fancy number plate, riding a bike without a helmet.

From December 13 to 16, the traffic police took disciplinary action against 20, 461 vehicles through CCTV footage and 11, 526 vehicles parked on the road. A total fine of Rs 1,69,79, 500 has been imposed on traffic violators so far. The highest penalty is for helmet action.

The police imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 for driving a vehicle without a licence and Rs 500 for refusing a police order. Earlier, only Rs 200 fines were being levied for this.

The first offence of not wearing a helmet is punishable by a fine of Rs 500 and the subsequent offence by a fine of Rs 1,500.

In the last four days, the amount of fine for not wearing a helmet is being shown as Rs 500 in the action taken by using CCTV footage. However, drivers who have a pending helmet penalty before that will actually have to pay a fine of Rs 1, 500. Therefore, the total amount of fine will increase later.
