Sensex plunges 694.96 pts

Mumbai, May 5 UNI) – The BSE Sensex on Friday dropped 694.96 pts to settle at 61,054.29 following heavy selling in HDFC twins alongwith IndusInd Bank amid weak global cues.

 

The Nifty too fell 186.80 pts at 18,069.

 

The equity markets came under pressure after the European Central Bank hiked rates and as fears over the US banking sector worsened with the collapse of PacWest Bancorp.

 

Surging over 500 pts on Thursday, the Sensex opened in red at 61,173.10, sliding 586 pts.It remained under pressure throughout the day, as it plummeted 747 pts at 61,002.17, days low, before closing at 61,054.29, down 694.96 pts from its previous close

 

The Nifty registered days high at 18,216.95 and days low at 18,055.45.

 

In indices, Financial Services declined 2.28 pc followed by Bankex by 1.87 pc, Metal by 1.55 pc, Technology by 0.59 pc

 

In 30 scrips, HDFC Bank was a major loser, down 5.90 pc at 1625.35 followed by HDFC by 5.63 pc to Rs 2701.55, IndusInd Bank by 4.57 pc to Rs 1082.35, Tata Steel by 2.16 pc to Rs 108.65 and Kotak Bank by 1.38 pc to Rs 1920.

 

The Mid Cap slipped 0.50 pc and Small Cap by 0.39 pc.

 

In 30 scrips, 10 advanced while 20 declined.

 

Asian Market was also seen weak as SGX

 

Nifty was down by 0.89 pc, Strait Times by 0.08 pc and Shanghai by 0.48 pc.
