Sex determination case ; Dr Neena Mathrani sentenced 3 yrs imprisonment
Pune : Eight years after she was arrested fo conducting sex determination tests, Dr Neena Mathrani was sentenced to three years of imprisonment by a judicial magistrate court
She was charged for offences under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act. Gynaecologist Dr Makarand Ranade was also booked in the case but he died during trial.
JMFC Vishakha Patil also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on Dr Mathrani.
Dr Mathrani is the owner of Namit Diagnostic Centre (X-ray & sonography clinic), Laxmi Road and works there as radiologist/ sonologist/ imaging specialist. It is registered with Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for conducting ultrasonography (USG) on pregnant women.
A sting operation was done by Dr Kiran Moghe of Janwadi Mahila Sanghatana, following which PMC had filed the case against the two doctors in the magistrate court.
