Pune: Sharad Pawar | The Nationalist Congress Party(NCP) president Sharad Pawar in a shocking disclosure, revealed on Thursday that thousands of women and girls had ‘disappeared’ in Maharashtra in the last year or so, raising severe concerns about the state’s law and order situation. “It has been one year since this new Maharashtra government of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis came to power.” The state is dealing with a number of difficulties, but law and order is at the top of the list. Attacks against women and girls are the most serious worry, and they are rising everywhere,” added Pawar.

He stated that around 6,889 women/girls had gone missing in the last year, from May 2022 to May 2023, using official information gathered from various municipal corporations, police commissionerates, and rural police headquarters. Pawar revealed that in the first half of 2023, between January 23 and May 23, a total of 2,458 girls/women went missing in four main towns across the state.

They are 738 from Mumbai, 937 from Pune, 721 from Thane, and 62 from Solapur, with no information on missing women/girls from the remaining ten civic corporations. According to local police, a total of 4,431 females have gone missing from the state’s 36 districts, including Amravati, Beed, Bhandara, Buldhana, Chandrapur, Dhule, Gondia, Jalgaon, Nandurbar, Nanded, Pune, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Washim. According to Pawar, 6,889 women/girls have gone missing in the state in the last year, from May 2022 to May 2023, with no clue on their whereabouts. “This is a major problem… Instead of making remarks, the state Home Minister should take action to ensure the security of our daughters and sisters,” Pawar added.
