Indian Railways | Railways Introduce Free, Eco-Friendly and Reusable Bags for Passengers

0

Pune : Indian Railways | The Indian Railways, in a bid to reduce waste and promote sustainability, has replaced conventional paper bags with eco-friendly and reusable alternatives for providing bed sheets and hand towels to passengers in air-conditioned classes. Previously, the paper bags used for this purpose were prone to bursting and contributed to increased waste generation. However, Aadhaar Corporation Limited proposed a solution to the Railways, suggesting the use of durable and reusable bags that would minimize the cutting of trees for paper production.

The new bags, although initially more expensive than conventional paper bags, are being provided to Central Railway free of charge. This cost-saving arrangement was made possible by the inclusion of advertisements on the bags. Advertisers have agreed to cover the expenses of the bags, allowing passengers to take them home and reuse them. The move not only reduces waste but also offers a sustainable alternative to passengers.

The pilot project was implemented on trains departing from Mumbai, with Aadhaar Corporation supplying approximately one crore bags to Central Railway within a year. This initiative has resulted in an annual cost saving of Rs 1.5 crore on paper bags. Recognizing the significant financial and environmental benefits, the Mumbai Division of Central Railway invited open tenders for the supply of bags with advertisements in reserved coaches of Mail/Express trains. Aadhaar Corporation secured the tender and will supply one crore bags to Central Railway, saving an estimated seven and a half crores over the next five years. Advertisers, including the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), have shown interest in partnering with the company for bag advertisements.

Passengers traveling in air-conditioned classes can now enjoy the comfort of knowing that the Railways are actively taking steps towards reducing waste and promoting sustainability.

The adoption of these eco-friendly and reusable bags by the Indian Railways highlights the organization’s commitment to sustainable practices and environmental responsibility. By replacing traditional paper bags with more durable alternatives, the Railways not only reduce waste generation but also contribute to the conservation of trees and natural resources.
