Mumbai : Policenama online The state government has taken an important decision as numerous police personnel have contracted Covid-19 in the past some days. All employees in the police force aged above 55 years have been directed to work from home (WFH).

 

State Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil revealed this in a press meet on Thursday. This will cause manpower shortage in the police force. Walse Patil said police personnel have worked from home in the earlier two waves of the pandemic.

 

In all, 71 police personnel contracted Covid-19 in the past 24 hours. The number of active patients in the force reached 265. In all, 123 police personnel died due to Covid-19 since March 2020.

 

A meeting of the Covid task force and the health department was chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Wednesday. A discussion was held to decide how to tackle rising cases of the infection. During this Omicron wave many doctors, police, hospital and other employees are likely to contract the virus. This will put burden on the remaining staff. To avert such a possible situation, stringent measures were discussed in the meeting.

 

230 doctors from Mumbai hospitals contract Covid-19

In all, 230 doctors from various hospitals in Mumbai have got the infection in the past few days. Among them are 51 from JJ Hospital, 35 from Lokmanya Tilak Hospital, 40 from KEM Hospital, and 35 resident doctors from Nair Hospital. The state administration is worried because doctors who are supposed to treat patients themselves have contracted the virus.

 

Lockdown likely to be clamped in Mumbai

Covid-19 patients are rapidly increasing in Mumbai, which has emerged as a hotspot. The situation has become grim within a few days after welcoming New Year. Currently, one of the four persons undergoing the Covid test is found positive in Mumbai.

 

The city reported 6,347 cases on January 1. It became 8,082 on January 3 while it reached 15,166 on January 5. The number of Covid-19 patients may cross 20,000 mark on Thursday. The municipal commissioner and the mayor had warned of a lockdown, if the caseload reached the 20,000 mark.
